One of the necessary core mechanics in Grand Summoners is to evolve your units. Every time you evolve your unit, their stats increase, their abilities become more effective, and they could gain completely new roles in your party depending on the unit. Here's how it's done.
Gren is the simplest thing to understand. Being the primary currency of the game, though not necessarily the most important, you need to spend it to evolve units. There are several ways to farm Gren easily, though you can probably get by just by completing quests early on.
Then come the elemental units listed in the table below. While appearing as enemies, they cannot function as Units, their role is to be used as material.
- First are the Spirits These guys are used to evolve a unit from 1★ to 2★ primarily, though they are also required to evolve from 2★ to 3★.
- Next are Phantoms. They are needed for evolving from 2★ to 3★ and 3★ to 4★. Less common then Spirits, they are still far from hard to obtain.
- Then there are Element-stones. Primarily used for 3★ to 4★, also used for evolving from 4★ to 5★. Harder to obtain in quests, but can be traded for unique currencies during events.
- Dragon Gods are used for evolving from 4★ to 5★, along with the aforementioned Stones are the most difficult to obtain in quests, but like the stones can be traded for unique currencies during events.
Something worth mentioning is that despite units using materials of the same element to evolve, they will often require materials from other elements to evolve as well. This largely seems to be based off of Race, Role and characterization as will be explored later.
Luck units largely follow these rules, though they will cut out the previous evolutionary material and replace it with a unique material obtained from quests related to that unit. For example, evolving Grad (4★) to Grad (5★) does not require Dragon God 'Vajara' , Dragon God 'Magnid' and here .

When a 5★ unit reaches Level 70, several of them can then be "Awakened". This increases their base statistics at level 70, adds a potential for 20 more levels of enhancement, and gives them access to their "True Arts". However, awakening a unit is not easy, and certainly not cheap.
Gren is the simplest way to understand how expensive it is to awaken a unit. Where it cost 30000 Gren to evolve a unit from 3★ to 4★, and 100000 Gren to evolve a unit from 4★ to 5★, it costs 5000000 (5 Million!) Gren to Awaken a unit, with the exception of the
Awoken Souls are always necessary to awaken units. You can choose to forgo all other materials and awaken your unit using only Gren and Awoken Souls. However, it costs 150 awoken souls, rather steep. The other way is with the help of other materials and 30 awoken souls, with the exception of the 3 Blade Masters, Crossover units and Luck units. Also, Luck units cannot be awoken with 150 awoken souls, instead requiring specific materials for each respective unit.
Dragon God Paradisos, also known as the "Rainbow God", is required for all awakenings that don't use only awoken souls. While you only need 1 for every awakening, they are fairly rare, with no regular quests having them as rewards. However, they are rewards for anniversary quests and commonly gifts for login campaigns whenever an event is coming soon or ongoing. You can also exchange them at the Giant Bosses, obtained either as rewards for clearing the stage the first time if you met the conditions (For the most part, no Deaths) or by defeating the hardest difficulty of these bosses (Awoken). Depending on the unit, you will need several of one or many fragments to awaken that unit, so be careful! You may end up using your Fragments on a unit that can't be used effectively to obtain other Fragments you need, impeding your progress. There are occasional missions that will make it easy to obtain Fragments, but they are rare, so use your Fragments wisely!
A point of interest is that units largely need Fragments of a Boss of the same element to awaken. However, this is no hard and fast rule. While they always require a Fragment of the same element, depending on race, role or even characterization, they might require a Fragment from a completely different Boss.
Race Example: Norn is an Earth unit, so she requires 2 Fragment of Goldola, an Earth elemental Boss, to awaken. However, as her Race is Fragment of Code XTF 'Eraser', a Machine Race Boss, despite the Boss not being of the Earth element.
Role Example: Black Dragon Knight Wargul is a Dark unit, so he requires 1 Fragment of Oldeus and 3 Fragment of Mavroskia, 2 Dark Bosses to awaken. But due to his role as a Kane is an Earth unit, like Norn. He needs Earth Boss Fragments, 3 from Goldola and 2 from Elpneumas, to awaken. However, despite being an Earth unit and certainly not a Machine like Norn, he requires a staggering 5 Fragment of Code XTF 'Eraser'. This last part is due to his reputation for using experimental and very advanced weaponry in story, not for any other reason.
There are other examples, but these are the simplest to understand. Either way, be mindful of how you use your Fragments.
Important! Most Luck units do not follow this pattern for awakening. Rather, in the hardest difficulties of their respective quests, they drop their own Fragments, of which they need 20 to awaken, as well as Gren, Awoken Souls and Paradisos. These special Fragments can be found here here.

Ascended units are the next level of unit evolution. A unit that can be ascended are summoned in an Awoken state, and can be relatively quickly leveled up with the right amount of enhance material. Ascension is quite difficult, though. For that, Soulgems are required, and a lot of them. 220 for most units, though Crossover units only need 100. The problem is that, aside from certain rare currencies that you can trade for Soulgems they can only be obtained in the Summoner's Road quests, a set of five Giant Boss gauntlets that get progressively harder as you progress. There is one for each element, and each quest has five Giant Bosses encounters. While earlier encounters can be beaten with relatively weak team comps, the higher stages ae ruthless, often with ridiculously odd gimmicks that can require very specific teams of units to beat.
Additionally, you can't farm the lower stages for large amounts of Soulgems for 2 reasons. First, they drop smaller amounts of them compared to higher stages, and if you're looking to get 220 of them, this will be a long grind. Secondly, you can only attempt a run through the stages 3 times a day for free, after which you have to spend Crystals to try some more.
Luckily, though, there are some easy ways to earn Soulgems through separate mission. You can earn 50 a piece for each stage of an individual you beat for the first time after the first stage, as well as 10 for every ten times you clear any of the stages in the dungeon. There are even missions in other events (like crossovers) that can give more incentives for clearing stages, as well as Special Daily Missions that give small amounts. However, most of these mission are 1 time only, so once you've used all of these Soulgems, you're back to grinding and hopefully have teams that can get you to later stages of the Dungeons.
To top everything off, you can't forget that you'll need 7 million Gren to Ascend a unit, as well as 30 Awoken Souls. Make sure you've farmed those Golcats, as that's an expensive price to pay. Oh, and unlike most units when it comes to awakening, there is no alternative method to Ascension, so you can't cheese the ascension materials with a copious amount of Awoken Souls.
All that aside, What you get is worth it. Ascended units can get up to level 120, so their base stats are more impressive than Awoken units, they have 2 Crest slots as a default with a maximum of three with sufficient Luck, limit breaking them up to 7 times (2 are locked to after Ascension) will give your unit a 6 star slot and the ability to choose the type of equip in the third slot (War Hero Fen can have either a 4★ Support or Defense slot) and they gain access to Super Arts, amongst the most powerful Art abilities in the game.
*Disclaimer* Ascended units can only be limit broken after Ascension with duplicate units or an Equipment Enhancing [ | ]
Listed below are Materials used for enhancing Equipment in Grand Summoners. Enhancing equipment in an important, sometimes necessary part of the game, as it can massively increase the effectiveness of your party.
The most commonly used enhancement material used are Ores These are used to enhance every level of equipment, with some exceptions. The amount needed for enhance increases with each ★, from 25 for 1★s to 360 for 5★s, and double that amount for "True" equipment.
Crystals, not to be confused with the Currency or the Boss Enhancement Material (Although similar in purpose) are the next level of enhancement material. They are used for 4★ and 5★ equipment, and are worth more. Comparatively, you need 55 Crystals to enhance 4★ equipment to MAX level 10, and 110 for 5★ equipment (Double for True 5★).
The rarest type of enhancement material are Spirit Stones. These materials are are only used for 5★ equipment and True equipment. Outside of some exceptions, 5★ equipment will require 20 Spirit Stones of the proper element to enhance to MAX level 10, and True 5★ needs 40 Spirit Stones.
There are some equips that do not use the standard enhancement template, however. These equips are obtained through Luck units events and periodic Events. This equipment has its own unique material related to the units at the center of this event. 5★ equipment in Events forgo ores from their enhancement in favor of said special material, and 4★ equipment uses this material on top of the usual material. These event and Luck materials can be found here.
Important! The type of ore, crystal or spirit stone used for enhancement does not depend on the type of equipment, but rather the element related to that equip. Based on the color system, one might imagine that all Physical equipment requires Fire elemental enhancement material to enhance, and Support requires Light. This is not the case! With one exception, all equips have 1 element they can be enhanced with, no matter the grade of material. For example, despite being a Physical equipment, the God Life Sword 'Seraph' uses Light material for enhancement. New players beware of this before grinding for material you don't need!
The one exception to the Rule above is the Temis Egg. This common 3★ Healing equipment, which can be summoned fairly regularly, oddly requires 60 of every elemental ore to enhance to MAX level 10.
